There are a lot of reasons why you might need to add a new WordPress user to your website.

This could include giving a member of staff access to post blogs or your website support team access to help resolve any website trouble you might be having.

Below you will see how you can add a new WordPress user and what ability each user role gives to the holder.

Add New User to WordPress

Firstly, log in to your website’s admin dashboard.

This is usually found by going to https://yourwebsite.com/wp-admin/

On the left-hand side, you will a menu with different headers. Every website will be different so you may see some headers that aren’t in the below image.

Add a new WordPress user.

Find the header Users and click it.

This will then show you all the user accounts associated with your website.

To add a new user in WordPress, click the Add New button located at the top of the page.

You can then fill out each field as required.

The Username, Email, and Password fields must be filled in.

Username

Enter a unique username for the new WordPress user. The new user will be able to use this or their email address to log in to your website.

It’s important to note that the username cannot be changed once set.

Password

When setting a password, it’s a good idea to set a strong password that no one could guess. This adds extra security to your website and puts you less at risk of being hacked.

Send User Notification

You can choose whether or not to let the user know that you have set up an account for them. If you don’t want them to know right now, untick the checkbox.

When the checkbox is ticked, an email is automatically sent to the new user’s email address. The email will contain a link for them to set their own password.

Role

Finally, select the role you would like the user to have.

The user role is very important because it determines what the user can do when logged in.

The default role is Subscriber.

Some Other WordPress User Roles Are:

Contributor

This role allows a user to edit and delete their own blog posts.

They can’t publish posts though.

Author

The author role allows a user to edit, delete, and publish blog posts.

This includes the uploading of images to a post.

Editor

Users with the editor role in WordPress have full control to the content sections of your website.

They can add, edit, publish, and delete any posts on the site, including the ones written by others. An editor can moderate, edit, and delete comments as well.

Editors do not have access to change your site settings, install plugins and themes, or add new users.

Administrator

This is the same role that you might have as the site owner.

It’s usually not a good idea to provide someone admin access unless they specifically need so.

An admin can do pretty much everything.

Shop Manager

You will only see this role if your website functions as an online store. This role will allow the user to manage shop features such as adding new products.

Summary

Add users to your website is easy and is a great way of managing your website and knowing what users did when logged in.

It is also possible to create a custom user role using a plugin so if you need a role that is a little bit more specific than the above, you can try that.
